29 May The scholarly reward system
Last December I was invited to give a talk at the SSHRC Leaders Annual Meeting about open access and the scholarly reward system. SSHRC Leaders are vice-presidents from all Canadian universities and form the board of the Canadian Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council. You can read about their meeting in their annual report here.
I talked about Plan S and scholarly publishing in general with a particular focus on profit margins of for-profit publishers and alternative open access models and their relationship with the reward system.
The figure below shows, in a very much simplified way, how various stakeholders in the scholarly reward system are linked and how the financing of publishing is linked to prestige. I thought I’d share it as a gif, as it might be helpful for others.
